The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires

What a title! How could I not read this book? I was pretty excited about it at the beginning. It seemed like it was going to be a great satirical take on the vampire genre. The levity didn’t last but I still would have been on board if it wasn’t for the stupid husbands. I had to keep reminding myself it was supposed to have taken place in the 1990s. It felt more like the 1930s the way the husbands belittled, controlled and discounted their wives. The women redeemed themselves slightly toward the end when some of them grew a spine but I was too disappointed they didn’t all walk away from their ridiculous marriages to forgive their previous subservience. I am disappointed since other than the overhanging paternalistic atmosphere, I would have really enjoyed this book.
