Kristin Hannah takes on the Great Depression with her newest novel about a woman who perseveres through hardship that was exacerbated by the actions of a man. She does a great job immersing the reader in the hardships of the time. The desperation of the people is palpable and we see how hard they struggle to survive often making new plans when they realize rumours of a better life just beyond the horizon are not to be had. I enjoyed this book and its richly developed characters.
