The Great Alone is set in a remote community in Alaska. The protagonist is a teenaged girl who is struggling to find herself while working to survive in a harsh environment. The war has left her father broken. He is unstable, violent and paranoid. This was one of those stories that kept going beyond what seemed to be the end. Although it was gratifying to read a final resolution to all the elements of the book, the ending did feel a bit drawn out and contrived.
