There is more to the title: A Dream, A Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War. Malcolm Gladwell has written a number of non-fiction books of which Outliers is probably the best known. This is a bit of a departure from his usual books in that while it does definitely discuss the psychology of how people interact, it is about a specific part of history. The audiobook is probably the best way to consume this book as it is read by the author and includes snippets of interviews and recordings from the people involved in the Bomber Mafia. This was the nickname for a group of American pilots in the second world war who had an almost religious belief in a particular strategy for ending the war. This strategy is contrasted with another man who had the same goal of ending the war but had a very different philosophy for doing so. Essentially, Gladwell explores the question “Does the end justify the means?”.
